The new Humberside Police Headquarters in central Hull is a 40-cell custody suite and divisional headquarters built to accommodate almost 800 staff on an eight acre, former brownfield site. The project consolidates twelve, previously separate offices and departments, all under one roof – and was completed for a total cost of £55,000,000.
The main office building comprises three floors laid out with a central foyer, large open plan arrangement as well as private offices and interview rooms. The building has achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating with a score of 71.80%, for its Design Stage Assessment. Throughout the project, the design ethos has been one of reducing energy costs and minimising environmental impact.
Sustainable techniques adopted include the installation of three helical wind turbines, green roofs, photovoltaic cells and a biomass boiler - which together are expected to generate 30% of the energy to be consumed on site – with heating delivered by energy-efficient, low mass, fast response Jaga heating solutions.
In the large open-plan area, a number of Jaga Strada Low-H20 heat exchangers, built-in to an attractive wooden casing, were installed around the perimeter of each floor. Dummy Strada front panels complete the stylish, contemporary appearance.
Jaga Oxygen Refresh Units were positioned on top of the Strada heat exchangers, and act as an integral part of the building’s ventilation strategy. The Oxygen is an energy-efficient, intelligent and fully programmable heating and ventilation system that is designed to ensure Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is actively controlled to remain at an optimum level.
Also contributing to the healthy, productive working atmosphere within the building is the use of Jaga’s wall-mounted Briza and Brise hybrid heating solutions which provide heat in the winter and refreshing cooling in the summer months.
Finally for the changing rooms, stairways and toilets of the office building, Jaga Tempo LST wall-mounted radiator was selected to provide safe, energy-efficient heating from units that always remain cool to touch.
