The information technology laboratory at Lancaster University – also known as InfoLab21 – is filled to the brim with state-of-the-art equipment, and it was in need of a contemporary heating to match.


The eye-catching architecture of the facility, featuring a large glass façade, makes a bold statement on the Lancaster University campus. As a result, every aspect of the edifice, including heating, had to be consistent with the contemporary style.

When considering heating for the modern building, Haden Young mechanical and electrical engineers, needed a system that would not only provide superior temperature management but would also complement the sleek, immaculate interior.

The Mini Canal, Canal Plus and Clima Canal built-in trench heating systems from Jaga UK proved ideal to meet the demands of the project. Haden Young installed 41 of these trench heaters throughout the building, including in the spacious reception area, restaurant, seminar rooms and multiple occupancy offices – all fitted adjacent to fully glazed walls.

Designed to be installed into a duct and easily concealed flush with the floor, this trench heating system prevents the build-up of condensation on the nearby glazing. The Low-H2O technology neutralises the cold draught from glass walls and reacts rapidly to any change in temperature, ensuring optimal climactic comfort. By incorporating this technology, the trench heating and ventilation products deliver maximum performance with minimum fuel consumption.

Trench heating provides an elegant, unobtrusive perimeter heating system for locations with large windows, offices, conservatories, shop windows and industrial rooms. Slim and discretely designed, the Mini Canal for instance comes in a staggering 588 dimensions, 231 grille models and 32 colours to blend into every interior. Special designs are also available including angles, curves and special adaptations for pipework and electrical trunking.

Offering heat outputs varying from 200 to 1000 watts per metre, the Mini Canal can be used as a primary heat source, compatible with all central heating installations, but also to augment other radiators, air conditioning or underfloor heating. The Mini Canal range is complemented by the fan-assisted Clima Canal and the deeper Canal Plus range for maximum output.
